What is the PTCB passing score?

The PTCB passing score is 1,400. PTCB reports PTCE results as scaled scores from 1,000 to 1,600, so you need 1,400 or higher to pass.

Checked against the sources on October 15, 2026.

A scaled score isn’t a percentage or a count of correct answers. PTCB converts your results onto the same scale for every version of the exam, so 1,400 means the same thing no matter which form you take. Only the 80 scored questions count.

You see an unofficial result on screen right after the exam. Your official result arrives in your PTCB account within three weeks.

If you need a retake

Plenty of people take the PTCE more than once. PTCB’s rules are:

  • There’s no waiting period for your second or third attempt, but you need your official score report first.
  • You wait six months before a fourth attempt.
  • After four attempts, you show PTCB proof of more preparation, such as a review course or a training program, before you apply again.
  • You apply and pay for each attempt.
