What pass rates do exam owners publish?

Every rate below is copied as the exam owner published it. “First-time” rates count only first attempts. “All attempts” rates count every exam taken, including retakes, so they run lower. Download the full dataset as CSV.

The owners are National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN), National Healthcareer Association (NHA), American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA), Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB), National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT), Federation of State Massage Therapy Boards (FSMTB), National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA), American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT), Dental Assisting National Board (DANB).

How were these figures collected?

We read each rate on the exam owner’s own website, or in a report the owner links from its own statistics page, and copied it exactly as published. Nothing is rounded, averaged or calculated from counts. Each row records the source, the owner’s own label for who the rate covers and the date we checked it. The rows are re-checked every quarter, as described in our editorial standards.

What are the limitations?

• Groups differ. NCSBN, AAMA, NBSTSA, FSMTB and ARRT report first-time rates. The NHA and DANB count every exam taken. PTCB and NREMT don’t say whether their rate counts first attempts only.
• Periods differ. Most owners report calendar years. AAMA reports July 2024 to April 2025, and FSMTB reports July to June.
• Owners revise figures. NCSBN notes that its live dashboard can differ slightly from its annual PDF reports. This dataset uses the PDFs.
• Rates aren’t comparable across exams. Each exam has its own candidates, eligibility rules and passing standard.

Which exams have no published pass rate?

• ATI TEAS: There is no pass mark. Each nursing program sets its own cutoff score, so ATI doesn’t publish a pass rate.
• HESI A2: There is no national pass mark. Each school sets its own cutoff, so Elsevier doesn’t publish an A2 pass rate.
• CNA: Each state runs its own nurse aide exam through its own testing vendor, so there’s no single national rate from one exam owner. State figures aren’t in this dataset yet.
• CPC (AAPC): AAPC doesn’t publish a pass rate for the CPC exam. Figures quoted on other sites don’t cite an AAPC source.
• CRCST (HSPA): HSPA publishes counts of candidates who passed and failed, but not a pass rate, and we don’t calculate rates ourselves.
