About the NREMT EMT exam
The National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT) gives the EMT cognitive exam. It’s a computer-adaptive test of 70 to 120 questions, and you get 2 hours. 10 of the questions are unscored pilot items. The skills (psychomotor) exam is separate and is approved through your state EMS office.

What the practice test will include
The NREMT pass will include practice tests that follow the National Registry’s EMT test plan, a question bank by topic, every answer explained, and insights that show which topics to review. A paramedic reviews every question, so the NREMT practice will open after our TEAS practice.

After every practice set, you’ll see which NREMT topics to work on next. Ten minutes counts, and it saves your place.

How many questions are on the NREMT
The EMT cognitive exam has between 70 and 120 questions, and you get 2 hours. It’s computer adaptive: after each answer it estimates your ability and picks the next question. Once you’ve answered at least 70, it stops as soon as it’s 95% sure you’re clearly above or below the passing standard. A short exam isn’t a sign you passed, and a long one isn’t a sign you failed.
Cognitive and psychomotor exams
The cognitive exam is the computer test on this page. The psychomotor (skills) exam is separate. NREMT asks for a skills competency approved through your state EMS office.
Passing score
There’s no passing percentage. If you don’t pass, your score report shows your result on a scale of 100 to 1500, with 950 marking the passing point, so you can see how close you were.
Retake rules
You get 6 attempts in total. After 3 attempts that don’t pass, you need documented remedial training, and after 6 you have to repeat a full EMT course. You can retest about 15 days after your previous attempt.
How to study for the NREMT
Primary assessment is 39 to 43% of the exam, by far the largest area, so it’s the best place to start. Our EMT study guide walks through each area in order of size.
